The apartment is located in a quiet yet central part of Edinburgh’s New Town, now accredited as a World Heritage site. The New Town was constructed between 1767 and 1890 as part of the wave of Enlightenment development which was to influence urban planning in Europe for two centuries. World class buildings line the neo-classical streets into which rich verdant spaces have been carefully integrated. One look at a present day bird’s eye view of the New Town (see map below) shows how spectacularly well public and private gardens have been formatted into the urban landscape. The entire development of 825 acres survives virtually intact.
Secret Edinburgh is located in a block which was designed by James Gillespie Graham for the Earl of Moray in 1822. Today, it takes only a few minutes to walk to Princes Street, the central thoroughfare in Edinburgh dominated by the castle high on the rock above Princes Street gardens. Shops, restaurants, bars, theatres and galleries are all nearby. Specialist food stores are located in neighbouring Stockbridge.
The medieval Old Town, also afforded World Heritage status, with its super-tall tenements and higgledy-piggledy, multi-levelled streets lies on the south side of Princes Street. It is certainly within walking distance of Secret Edinburgh for the energetic or a short but interesting bus ride away for those who prefer gentler sight-seeing.
The main railway station, Waverley, is just over half a mile away. In a traffic-free or construction-free city, the taxi journey would only take 4 minutes. At the moment, the town centre is congested. On foot, it takes about 18 minutes which also happens to be how long it takes to walk to Haymarket railway station, to the west of Princes Street.
Edinburgh Airport lies to the west of the city, less than 9 miles from Secret Edinburgh. By car, the journey takes about 20 minutes. The airport is linked to the city by road only. Bus and taxi services are good and car rentals are available at the airport. If you would like to be met at the airport, please indicate when booking.
